Subject: chiclids
Question Do chiclids sometimes die after they have their babies? We don't which chiclid they belong to(we have 8 chiclids), but we have had 2 fish die right after we found babies. One of the two actually had at least three sets of babies.
Thanks,
Answer Hi Jessica;
Cichlids are egglaying fish and usually both parents aggressively guard the nest of eggs and babies after they hatch. Cichlids shouldn't die after laying eggs though, but anything is possible I guess. The parents will chase away and sometimes kill fish that come too close to the eggs and/or babies. Watch and see which fish look like they are protecting the babies and move the other fish out or put in a divider. Extra fish in a breeding tank are in danger, especially if the breeding fish are cichilds.

Chris Robbins
