Subject: My crown tail beta has green stuff growing on him
Question I have had my betta fish for about 6 months or so and just in the past 2 months theres been green stuff growing on his mouth and face almost to his fins..I got the only thing they had in the pet store which was betta fix remedy. It starts to go away after about 10 days of not changing his water..then I change his water and the next day the green stuff is back...I dont know if it will ever stay away. My tank is 1/2 gallon, no filter, used to change his water once a week and the green stuff doesnt seem to bother him much at all. Plus I cant find any information about green stuff growing on a beta fish...just white stuff.
Answer Hi Ashley;
There are several possibilities. It might not be anything at all and is a natural color variation. Bettas have scales on their heads that look shiny, metallic or a somewhat different color from the rest of their body. It might look like it's "back" after a water change because the water change makes him feel better and his colors intensify. It's even possible he's growing algae on his skin or algae is growing on a bacterial infection. If you could send me a picture of him I might be able to tell. Send it to;

He really needs a water change twice a week because his tank is so small. If it were a gallon or larger you could change it weekly but twice a week or more is what he really needs. Wastes build up in there because it has nowhere to go and will make him sick for sure eventually.
