Question I was recently fishing and I tried to remove the hook and I heard some popping noises and thought it was the hook comeing out, but it seemed to be the jaw popping out of socket. He wouldn't close the jaw, but i released him and he swam away fine. What do you think is going to happen?
Answer Hi John;
The jaw hinges on the sides of his mouth probably became overextended and became misaligned so they locked in the open position. Hopefully he worked it out on his own. A fish can sometimes open and close it's mouth enough on it's own or hit itself on a rock or something and fix it. If it happens again, the only way you can help a fish like that is to gently and slowly pull the jaw farther open and let it re-align itself. It can take several tries but they are usually okay after that if it works as long as there isn't any actual damage.
