Fish - gold fish

Expert: Tom Lee - 4/30/2008

Question
I though my goldfish may have been pregnant or 'in season' until I found this website! The largest of my three fish, who is flatter with a small tail is constantly chasing round after my smaller, rounder, with a fan type fancy tail, fish. The big fish is swimming next to the second fish as if protecting it.The big fish isn't causing any damage or attacking just swimming along side. What is going on?!!!

Answer
Hi Elizabeth,

In the wild Goldfish tend to shoal loosely together. They don't really have anything to protect them except numbers, so I suspect your two are just sticking together.

If they've been in the tank for a while most Goldfish will pick up a little friend that they stick with more than any other fish.

It's a simple as that!

Tom
