GOT A QUESTION ABOUT:
Basic needs for specific fish, illnesses, best tankmates, breeding, water chemistry, tricks to safely cut corners, and/or “stupid” questions? Maybe I can help! :)
I like to explain why you do things in aquariums (like why to use spring instead of distilled, or what pH numbers mean, ect.) so you understand why and not just taking someone’s word for it. I also like giving answers where you have two choices so you can choose which is best for the time and money you can commit to your fish. I understand how tight money can be and how expensive fish related things get.

I will NEVER leave you with an “I don’t know.” Ever. I hate that. That would waste your time and that's just mean. :)

Experience
I have had tropical fish since 1999. I currently have: a 55gal, ten 10gal, 3 five gallons, three 2gal, and a bunch of jars and bowls. At the time I'm typing this, I have: 14 angels, 13 goldfish, 73 bettas, 12 barbs, 5 catfish, too many guppies, 4 gouramis, 2 plecos, 10 loaches, bunch of swordtails, and probably a few others, lol.

I love to rescue fish. I've had everything from mutant danios, to one eyed goldfish, to my newest adoptee, a 2 year old betta with a MASSIVE tumor problem. He was brought to a pet shop and left there because the lady didn't know what to do with him. He's pretty scary looking. One of the guys at the store there I know let me have him. :D YAY! Elephant Man lives in a gallon bowl with pretty stones in my bathroom.

Plus!!!

I sell: veil, delta, halfmoon, plakat, and crowntail bettas as well as halfblack and blonde tuxedo fancy guppies. Ask me about it sometime.

Thanks for checking out my profile!

Question
My shubunkin goldfish currently resides in a ten gallon tank, all by himself. My PH is around 7. I did a water change a few minutes ago, and I put in the recommended amount of my ammonia remover. The water temperature is 74 degrees Fahrenheit(23 degrees Celsius).
I'm currently treating my goldfish for Ick(Ichtyopthirius). I'm using the Jungle brand Ick Clear Tank Buddies(they work great). He is doing much better, but one thing that concerns me is that it look like his eyes are more rounded than usual and seem to slightly bulge out a bit. His left eye is a little bit worse than the right. I'm not sure if it's pop-eye, and I think it may be. He is swimming around normally and has been eating when I feed him (every other day). What's wrong and how do I treat it? Thanks so much for your help.

Answer
Hey Hannah!

There's no sharp plants or rocks in the tank right? Goldfish are so clumsy they swim right into things and hurt themselves, lol. If that's the case, just wait for it to heal.

Popeye is only from two things: injury, and sickness. Popeye isn't a disease itself; it's a symptom of one. It sounds like it is either from the stress of the ich, or he's getting a secondary infection from the ich wounds. If the ich is clearly really well, it's probably a secondary infection. Secondary infections are BAD!

What I would do, is wait a day or two. If his eyes continue to get larger, treat with an antibiotic. Ampicillin is really good for popeye infections. If you can't find that, use a med with either: Kanamcyin, or tetracycline. Petsmart, Petco, and Petsupermarket sell Maracyn TC. That has tetracycline, if you can't find kanamycin. It's hard. Stuff is AMAZING! I have YET to have ANY fish with ANYTHING short of dropsy die while using that. I take in REALLY bad fish too. Most are going to die within 2 days. They stuff heals very well too. They need to make a human-safe kanamycin, lol.

The only thing with tetracycline, it will turn your water FUNKY! I've used it and it made my water look like tea in my tanks. It's foamy too. Besides that, good stuff! Just clean your tank after and all's well. That's another reason I'm obsessed with kanamycin (I sound like a comerical, lol). It doesn't smell, change the water, or do anything weird. :) Call your local petshops that carry fish and ask if they have any meds with kanamycin. If your little guy ever gets sick, you'll have the miracle cure on hand.

:) Good luck with everything too! Hope your little goldie gets better.
