Subject: sick gold fish.
Question Alex, I've had my goldfish for about 7 years. I recently did a partial water change (about 1/3) added new stones on the bottom (after rinsing thoroughly) and added some new (fake) plants as well. Next, I vacuumed the bottom and added some PH to adjust. My stick test told me my water is perfectly balanced accept for being a little high in the hard water category which has never been an issue. 3 days later my Koi died and now a bigger problem; My goldfish is struggling. He is very sluggish but more puzzling: his mouth is wide open and he can't (or won't) shut it. It almost appears as if he might have something caught in there but I certainly don't see it. What is the problem and what can I do?
Answer Hi Rob, this is a difficult question to answer as I'm not there myself to see. It may be an internal infection or parasitic problem. Perhaps certain parts of your water chemistry is diffrent then before and he may not survive the adjustment because of shock but he may adjust. If you think it is a infection or parasitic problem there are chemicals out there that may or may not help. Its hard to cure such things if they are far into the process so its not a sure save but you can always try! Hope your day gets better, Alex
