Question Hi , i Have 2 Yellow lab malawi cichlids that are holding eggs , i was wondering what the next steps would be . i Have a second tank just under 3ft that is set up and ready to hold fish/fry . please reply thanks .
Answer Well as soon as the pair has cleaned off a section of the glass, a piece of wood, or a large leaf to lay their eggs on, spawning will occur. The male is generally aggressive towards the female during that time, so make sure the tank is large enough (at least 45g) and has plenty of hiding places for the female. Once the eggs are laid, the male will go over them and fertilize them. Cichlids make great parents, so you're not going to have to worry about them eating their eggs, of course, only unless the water quality is perfect and everything is fine in the tank for the breeding pair.
Once the eggs hatch, you can move the fry very carefully into the other tank, and raise them there. A good diet for the fry for about a month or two would be newly hatched brine shrimp as it is the perfect size for their mouths. You can also buy Hikari's brand of cichlid fry food, although the extra protein is very much recommended.
