Question
QUESTION: Hi,
thought I'd note to you that the apt. building I live in is HUGE and it has plumbing issues and sewage smells around sometimes...I'm just thinking about the water quality...I live in San Diego, Ca. and I've been reading up as much as possible about the water quality here, it seems so-so, but mixed with this building's particular problems, I just wonder why the ammonia shot up so abruptly, she had no leftover food .hmmmmm...I hope it's ok I had to do an emergency water change and I couldn't use the tap...she is acting fine, chasing and eating the bubbles that form from new water...she loves doing that...she seems happy as a lark...

ANSWER: Hi Liane,
The problem is your tap water.  Ask your Pet Store Manager if they are having problems with their water, if they live nearby.  You could also call the "water inspection unit" in your town, or the water company.  Old pipes should be changed. especially if you are smelling sewage.  It's not fit for drinking.  You have no choice now than to use bottled water.  As long as she seems  fine, she should be okay.  If she is eating, then she is happy.

QUESTION: Yes, she's eating and acting fine.  Thank God!
I found a website for Kent Marine products, and I guess this guy found a way to turn R/O water into god fish water, so I am gonna order a mineral replacement from him for the water.

I am still seeing the rim around her caudal fin, hard to tell if it's a color change or beginning of fin rot, it's dark though. what is the best treatment if it turns out to be fin rot, and how long should I wait to treat it if it remains?

Answer
Since your tap water showed ammonia, this is why she is getting sick.  The best cure for fin, and tail rot when caught in early stages, is to keep her in clean water.  Have you checked the PH?  Bettas do best around neutral PH 6.5-7.0.  Make sure she is always in the same PH.  If it is higher than the one she was use to, add driftwood to bring it down.  Never use chemicals.  Adding diluted aquarium salt would help.  Before treating her with medication, add 1 teaspoon diluted aquarium salt to her water, and keep her water extremely clean.  If her condition gets worse, then, and only then should you medicate.  I would use Maracyn-2.  Follow the directions on the package, and be very careful not to overdose.
