Question
QUESTION: I have a 30 gallon tank that was been set up for about three mounts now. I used to have two gold fish in it but i give them a away and got my first set of african ciclids one is a Electric yellow ciclid. The outher two are tiger looking ones. How big do you think they are going to get in my tank and what should i feed them? They are about two inces long now. thank you Aaron

ANSWER: Hi Aaron,
I would have to know the names of the other two cichlids.  There are so many tiger looking ones, and each grow to different sizes.  The electric yellow will grow to 3-4 inches.  He is relatively peaceful compared to other mbunas.  You must be careful what you mix him in with.  Always ask the vendor the names of the fish you buy.
Electric yellows are omnivores, they eat both plant, and animal food.  This means they need a good quality plant flake, other kinds of good quality flakes, pellets for african cichlida, frozen foods, such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and freeze dried food.
They should be kept in bigger tanks, meaning that 50 gallons would be best, with caves, and lots of hiding places.  Their water should be alkaline.

QUESTION: Lynda My Yellow Electric ciclid has black all round his mouth and under him what could it be and how can i make him better. Is he ok? he eats great!!  Aaron

Answer
Ho Aaron,
Black month may be that he is picking up the gravel, make sure, if this is the case, that your gravel is fine, like sand.  It could also be that he scraped his mouth, this should go away quickly.  Make sure your water chemistry is perfect.  This means no ammonia, or nitrites.  If you do have ammonia, nitrites, do water changes until you are rid of it.  Also check your PH to make sure that it is alkaline.  African Cichlids need alkaline water.  7.6 - 8.0 is best.  The fact that he is eating is a good sign.  If it gets worse, write back to me.
