Question Hello I got my Betta about 7 months ago, hes been happy having 2 aqua frogs as tank-mates. Sushi, the fsh, has always been extreemly tame, ie .. eating from my hand, he lets me pet him. For the past two days hes been floating on his side, hes alive, when i even judt go near the tank , its almost freaks out and swims fast to all corners of the tank. but he seems to end up in that position, like hes hurt one side, what are your suggestions?? His tanks clean, i keep the water at the same temp. Im going to give him some worms tonight, that always makes him happy.
Answer Hi Jenefer,
Your Betta has Swim Bladder Disease. This disease is caused by poor diet, and overfeeding which leads to constipation, and then Swim Bladder. When Swim Bladder goes untreated it leads to other diseases which are usually fatal. To begin, feed him a frozen cooked pea. Remove the outer layer, and cut the pea into small pieces. Feed the pieces to your Betta one piece at a time making sure that he eats them. Do not feed him anything else for 2 days. He must waste. If his condition worsens, and he does not waste, you will have to cure him with an antibiotic. Kanamycin is very good for Swim Bladder Disease, but sometimes hard to find. If you cannot find this medication, buy Tetracycline, or Furan-two. Follow the directions on the package. Be careful not to overdose, and remove any salt in the water if you have used salt. Do a complete water change if he has no filter, and if he does, do a 25% water change.
A betta should be fed a varied diet. Betta Pellets, Betta Flakes, Plankton Flakes, Glassworms, Mealworms, Daphnia, and Bloodworms. The more you vary the healthier he will be. They need the vitamins found in different foods. One day feed him Pellets, the next worms, the next flakes, and so on. Feed him twice a day in small amounts...example: 2 pellets for one meal. His tummy is the size of his eye, and we must always remember this when feeding him. He must have one pea a week, and on the day you give him the pea, feed him nothing else. He must clean out his system.
If you have any other questions on the betta, please write me. I love them, breed them, and know how to take care of them.
I hope the little man pulls through.
