I specialize in Gouramis, Black Moors, Fantail goldfish, and Bettas. I can answer questions about fish behavior, tank mates, diseases, and living conditions. I do not have much experience with breeding these types of fish, however.

Experience
Fish are my passion - I have raised these types of fish for as long as I can remember. I am a college student at Purdue University where I have a major in Biology and a position as a lab technician in a fish laboratory.

Question
I just purchased 3 Bettas from Petco on Thursday. When I asked about putting more than one in a bowl. The sales person told me that 1 male could be in the bowl with 2 females. This morning (Sat) one of the females was dead. Did the sales person give me the wrong information?

Answer
Hello Veronica-

Don't ever trust salesmen...they're trying to sell you as many fish as possible, they're not concerned about the fish's health. You should never keep male and female bettas together unless they're breeding. Females are almost as aggressive as males, and when kept in a tiny bowl, they get very territorial. Since there's not enough territory for each fish to have their own space, they'll fight. Never keep more than one fish in that small of space...it would be like stuffing three strangers into a small empty room and expecting them to live there together - except bettas are aggressive by nature, whereas humans are generally pretty friendly :)

It's a shame the person who sold you the fish didn't give you correct information, but unfortunately, most people don't know much about the pets they're selling, they're just doing their job.

The idea set-up would be a 5 gallon tank with two females and a bowl for the male, or a bowl for each fish.

Hope this helps, and sorry for the loss of your fish. :(
