AboutAmber Worman Expertise I specialize in Gouramis, Black Moors, Fantail goldfish, and Bettas. I can answer questions about fish behavior, tank mates, diseases, and living conditions. I do not have much experience with breeding these types of fish, however.
Experience Fish are my passion - I have raised these types of fish for as long as I can remember. I am a college student at Purdue University where I have a major in Biology and a position as a lab technician in a fish laboratory.
Question We recently purchased a blackmoor goldfish and after a day or so, we noticed it's bug eyes are now empty sockets. We have not observed any aggressive behavior from the other fish and after about a week, it still swims normally and still feeds. Is this normal?

Answer Hello Angela -
Whenever black moors lose their eyes it is a cause for concern. Check the filter to be sure the fish can escape the intake (the moor could have been trapped and had its eyes pulled out) and watch your fish as much as possible to be sure the tank mates are not aggressive. Just because you don't see them fight doesn't mean they are not fighting. Also look over your fish to be sure they aren't infected with a disease or fungus (furry growth or specks of any color are bad news.) Adding Melafix to the water will help soothe the eye sockets, but they won't ever regrow. Many moors are able to live full lives without their eyes; just make sure he is feeding normally.
