Answer
Chris,                                                       Go get coppersafe immediately. You have a parasite. It happens. This treats your tank for 30 days. They gather around their gills and can suffocate the, They are fluke or flat worms... goldies often carry them. You don't have to take your carbon out if it is more than 3 days old. If you change water replace the medication as necessary. It is 1 tspn per 4 gallons. Sometime depending on the parasite it can take 21 days to get rid of.  I think you will be ok with this..... If after 3 weeks you are still seeing him scratch we will try something else. In the meantime add some aquarium salt to your tank. I tblspn per 5 gallons. It helps your fish resist parasites and stop (flashing). Good Luck Tina
