Question hi amber,
i have a 60 litre tank with 5 baby fantails. i just recently upgraded my tank from a 8 litre. i was wondering now i have a bigger tank if i should add special things into the water besides the water ager. should i check the water pH and how often. also how long does it take until they become adults, and how can you tell between male and females. should i alternate their food so they get more nutrients and variety. how often should you feed baby fantails.
Answer Hello Lauren-
The 60 liter (~16 gallon) tank will be large enough for a while, but once your fantails get bigger they will need to be moved to a bigger tank (or split up into two tanks.)
There's really nothing you need to add to the tank water other than a clarifier/ager, but salt and Melafix can help to keep them happy and healthy.
I would do a water check once per week (you can take a sample to a pet store to get all the parameters checked at once.)
As for sexing the babies and knowing how long until they become adults, no one really knows for sure...It's very difficult to sex fish, and some varieties take much longer than others to mature.
Whether or not you want to alternate their food is up to you; goldfish flakes provide all the nutrients they will need, but a little variety is good for their digestive tracts. Feedings should be three times per day if they are less than 1 inch long, and two times per day if they are bigger than 1 inch long.
