Question
Hi...
I started a new 200L (50 gal) tank 3 months ago... and unfortunately I got a few Bettas Crown Tail from Singapore.
1 Male and 3 female, they were mailed over Europe/Portugal and took 12 days to arrive poor creatures.

The male was and is  OK

The Black Females were all doted with Icteo and stayed on the bottom of the Tank for 1 week during the treatment with Blue Medicine and a 30ºC (90ºF) temperature, they recovered well.

The red Female had no icteo but it was swollen but very active, always going near the male, the fish shops said she was ready to spawn but my male does not make the nest... but today she was sad and had lost a bit of color, and I started searching the net, maybe she is obstipated or other thing, like dropsy (gladly the scales are not raised)...
From the Net I learned some possibilities, I moved her to a  4 Litter (1 Gal) tank added some fake plants boiled a pea and gave to her she did not eat nor a fish food flake I added later, and added a teapoon of salt to the water... What can i do more, is there a way to treat her better...

Here is a picture from last week, now she is paler and sad...

Thank's, Any help would be apreciated...

Answer
Hello Tiago -

Wow! Your little girl is sure puffed up. Poor thing...

It looks more like egg or fluid retention than dropsy (usually dropsy affects the whole fish's body and the scales are raised.) Or she may have been fed a large amount  of food before she traveled and has not passed any of it. My advice would be to fast her (no food) for 2-3 days, while treating her water with Epsom salts (not aquarium or table salt.) Use just a tiny bit, maybe half a teaspoon, and only add the salt when you do water changes. Keep offering her peas, but if she doesn't eat them be sure to take them out so they don't rot.

Hope this helps,
-Amber Worman
