Fish & Seafood - scallops

Expert: Greg Shreenan - 1/29/2008

Question
could you please tell me where scallops come from and information on them, and what kind of fish are they?

Answer
Hi Gloria, I hope all is well for you today. :)

There are basically two kinds of Scallops.  Sea Scallops are the big ones, about the size of a golf ball. Bay Scallops are smaller and are about the size of the tip of your thumb including the nail.

Scallops are clams.  They are called scallops because the shell is wavy or scalloped if you will.  The classic picture of a sea shell is usually a scallop shell.

The meat or the part you eat is actually the muscle of the shell.  It opens and closes the shell among other things.

The sea scallops ( big ones ) are cold water scallops and come from the Atlantic ocean and the Bay scallops are warm water scallops and come from the Pacific or the Gulf of Mexico.

To review the scallop is a type of clam with a wavy shell and there are two kinds, Sea Scallops (Big ones) and Bay Scallops smaller ones.

I hope this was helpful
Have a very nice day!

Your Friend, the fish guy

Greg
