About Joe Douglas
Expertise
I can answer questions on custom rod building and rod restoration and rod repair for bamboo, graphite and fiberglass fishing rods. I also have experience in estimating the value of vintage rods and determining the original manufacturer.

Experience
I operate a custom rod building business providing fly rods, spey rods, casting and spinning rods in bamboo graphite and fiberglass. I have a personal interest in vintage rods and have a small collection of reference books and articles which often help shed light on the origins of the older rods.

Fishing - Compac Trolling Reel

Expert: Joe Douglas - 10/21/2009

Question
I have a Compac 3000 level wind trolling reel I purchased in 1975.  It has worked perfectly up until a week ago when the level-wind ceased to go from left to right.

On the box is listed:
Distributed by
COMMERCE PACIFIC CANADA, LTD.
165 Idema Road
Markham, Onterio, Canada

ST. CROIX CORPORATION
9909 South Shore Drive
Minneapolis, Minn. 55441

I've looked on the Internet and can't find either company.  I know that they were once owned by now defunct Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Bethlehem, PA.

I'd like to get it repaired but don't know where to send it.

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Richard,

I would probably start with the St. Croix Rod Company in Park Falls, Wisocnsin.  Their web site is www.stcroixrods.com and there is a "Contact Us" button at the top of the home page.  This company sells both rods and reels and is possibly the correct place for you to get the help you need.  If not, they may know where to direct you next.  Good luck.

Thanks,  Joe
