Fishing - Musky rod

Expert: Joe Junion (Jomusky) - 10/22/2009

Question
I have a Heddon Pal #6273-5' Muskey Special rod. I am unable to attach a Penn 500 reel to the pole %26 from the small guides, I know it needs to be a casting reel. Can you tell me what types of reels can be used with this pole? Is this pole just a freshwater pole or can it be used for ocean fishing. I live near the Pacific ocean.

Answer
I would use a bass sized bait casting reel....A Shimano 300 Curado would be the best choice.

I would think an old 5' musky rod would be very stiff and hard to cast. I newer set up with a 7 - 8' rod would be the best.

Rods are not effected by saltwater too much.

Your old Heddon might be worth some money. Maybe you could sell it on e-bay and make enough to buy a set up that would work better for you.

Hook Em' Hard,
Joe
