About Joe Douglas
Expertise I can answer questions on custom rod building and rod restoration and rod repair for bamboo, graphite and fiberglass fishing rods. I also have experience in estimating the value of vintage rods and determining the original manufacturer.
Experience I operate a custom rod building business providing fly rods, spey rods, casting and spinning rods in bamboo graphite and fiberglass. I have a personal interest in vintage rods and have a small collection of reference books and articles which often help shed light on the origins of the older rods.

Fishing - South Bend 59-9
Expert: Joe Douglas - 10/23/2009
Question Hi Joe. I also have The South Bend 59-9' model in Good-Very Good condition, with original bag and tube. Who would I be able to contact that would be interested in buying this. I am not sure how to find collectors of this item, and I would rather not post it on eBay or craigslist. I truly appreciate your time and any info you could provide. Thanks, Max
Answer Hi Max,
Value on the rod is going to be in the $90-$120 range...maybe a bit more if it is really great shape. There are a lot of these around in about every condition imaginable. As long as you have all four pieces and the bag and the tube you are in good shape.
Options for selling the rod outside of the online auctions would include advertising it yourself in the local or regional papers; consigning it to an antique store; taking it to swap meets or flea markets; and possibly advertising it on one of the online discussion forums for bamboo fly rods or fly fishing. Also, you might check to see if you have a local fly fishing club and ask if any of the members would be interested in the rod.
The model 59 is a pretty decent rod for general use so you should be able to find a buyer.
Thanks, Joe
