Question
Hi Jim!
I am going for a trip to the middle east and I have almost 7 days in Syria, so I wonder if you can give me any information about what is possible to catch there and what kind of fishing methods i should use, also if there are some roles. Anything will be so useful.
thanks allot in advance

Answer
I did a lot of research only to find there is not much fishing in Syria, at least not of the kind Europeans and Americans are used to. Most is for food and not recreational. Therefore how to fish is not presented on the net much.
Here is a list of species I got.

Acipenseriformes    Acipenseridae    Acipenser sturio    native    Sturgeon
Anguilliformes    Anguillidae    Anguilla anguilla    native    European eel
Atheriniformes    Atherinidae    Atherina boyeri    native    Big-scale sand smelt
Mugiliformes    Mugilidae    Chelon labrosus    native    Thicklip grey mullet
Siluriformes    Clariidae    Clarias gariepinus    native    North African catfish
Cypriniformes    Cyprinidae    Cyprinus carpio carpio    introduced    Common carp
Cyprinodontiformes    Poeciliidae    Gambusia affinis    introduced    Mosquitofish
Cyprinodontiformes    Poeciliidae    Gambusia holbrooki    introduced    Eastern mosquitofish

Perciformes    Gobiidae    Gobius paganellus    native    Rock goby
Mugiliformes    Mugilidae    Liza aurata    native    Golden grey mullet
Mugiliformes    Mugilidae    Liza ramado    native    Thinlip mullet
Mugiliformes    Mugilidae    Liza saliens    native    Leaping mullet
Mugiliformes    Mugilidae    Mugil cephalus    native    Flathead mullet
Cypriniformes    Balitoridae    Nemacheilus angorae    native    Angora loach
Salmoniformes    Salmonidae    Oncorhynchus mykiss    not established    Rainbow trout
Perciformes    Cichlidae    Oreochromis aureus    introduced    Blue tilapia
Perciformes    Cichlidae    Oreochromis niloticus niloticus introduced    Nile tilapia
Pleuronectiformes    Pleuronectidae    Platichthys flesus    native    Flounder
Perciformes    Cichlidae    Sarotherodon galilaeus galilaeus native Mango tilapia
Siluriformes    Siluridae    Silurus glanis    introduced    Wels catfish
Syngnathiformes    Syngnathidae    Syngnathus abaster    native    Black-striped pipefish
Perciformes    Cichlidae    Tilapia zillii    introduced    Redbelly tilapia

Tilapia will not bite on normal baits. They are vegetarians. They eat water plants.
The trout will hit the normal Trout style baits. As you see the Brown and Rainbow are in Syria but are introduced. Not sure what waters they are in, but will be in the mountains most likely or in streams with cold water.  Wells Catfish are very good game fish. They will hit live or dead bait and live by smell quite a bit. They inhabit lots of European and Middle eastern areas.
Mullet and Flounder are saltwater fish normally but these are listed in a Freshwater list, unless I misunderstood the writing. The Carp and the African Catfish will feed similar to the Wells. I am not familiar with African Catfish unless these are the same ones that got into Florida about 20 years ago and can walk on land using their fins and have the ability to breather air. I wish I could give you more info. Both Bait Casting and Spinning gear should be heavy for most of these fish except for the trout.
Jim
