Fishing - hardy bamboo rod

Expert: Joe Douglas - 10/17/2009

Question
I would like to know the value of my hardy bamboo rod.  It's a salmon rod.  Above the 2 handed cork handle is written: Regal Trade mark.  Lalakon.  The Wee Murdock.  All three are place one above the other.  It comes with an extra top section and the original cloth bag.  It's connected together with brass fittings.  Its comes with the original wrench for tightening the reel seat.  there is also a Silex reel. A " Major" 4"  There is a 3 engraved into the reel.  It looks like someone did it themselves.  Its  702 498 929
Can you help me?
thanks.

Answer
Hi Quille,

The reel is probably valued in the $200-$300 range.  This is outside my area of expertise, but I do have a reference book that lists the Silex Major and provides these values and dates the reel from the 1920s.

I don't have any information on the rod.  My reference books do not list this model.  I assume the rod would be valued at afew hundred dollars, but don't have any firm data.

You might try contacting Hardy Brothers directly and askign for assistance in dating and evaulating both the rod and the reel.  Hardy is still very actively involved in the business and does have a web site where you can contact them directly.  I think this would be the best bet for your rod and reel.

Thanks,  Joe
