Is it? fly or casting rod ? Reel seat is below or above the cork handle ?
Check metal for id and patents ? What is it made of; bamboo ( flat sided) fiberglass or graphite ( round)? Weight in oz? What is the diameter of the rod above the cork? Where was it purchased ? What type of metal nickel-silver, tin, or chrome platted brass? A complete description of any logos or labels. Length of rod per section and number of sections. Total rod length.
Please read the following if the rod has either of the following two labels
Montague or H-I (Horrocks-Ibbotson).
They are looked down upon by the collecting community and often they are justified. They were mass produced , rather heavy and very slow. They are not going to resale for very much.

Question QUESTION: We sent the following descriptions, but neglected to ask for an estimate of value.
First Rod: E. W. Edwards & Sons 9', 3 sections with extra tip Bamboo fly? rod, maroon & gold thread wraps, brown varnish, reel seat below cork, chrome plated brass?, original canvas bag & aluminum tube. Inscribed on reel seat: A Gift to Capt. George L. Weyler USN from Officers of USS Vestal 25 April 1939. Inscribed on cap below reel seat: E. W. Edwards & Sons Makers Bristol Conn. Faint etching on rod above cork handle Edwards, Mt. Carmel.
Badly scratched painted label on on tube E. W. Edwards & Sons logo in red, and printed E. W. Edwards & Sons A Division of Horton Mfg. Co. Bristol Conn below lines for Model, Length & Weight - unreadable if ever there. Appears
little or no use, minor checking on varnish. Weight less than 1 pound.
Second Rod: Shakespeare #1307-9 Tony Accetta Model, canvas bag, similar description and condition.

First rod is an 9 ft Edwards, Mt. Carmel.
Price Book: Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book
Homel gives the 8' E.W. Edwards "Mt. Carmel" fly rod with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of $125, 295 and $600 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. A nine foot rod is worth less than shorter rod and as the prices are older I would go with them directly .
Homel gives the Shakespeare Model 9 ft 1312 "Tony Accetta" fly rod with an extra tip, 3 sections a value of $35, 90 and $175 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.

Good question and you have hit the best way to evaluate the condition of a rod - have a pro do it. I do it for free in Denver. You can feel very confident that I will return you rod if you want to mail it , just include return shipping amount.
Selling - I do it on consignment on ebay and my web page. I have an interest in your Edwards. My profession descriptions always sell rods better that owner sales.

To feel more confident I think it is okay to get the book ,Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book, which should be at your local library. Homel has a detailed section on condition that most people can understand.
