Fishing/6 sided metal fishing rod.

Hello; I recently found a 6 sided steel fishing rod wrapped in a cloth cover. The rod did not have a handle, just the pole. The rod is 45" in length, has 2 guides plus tip, brown in color. The eyes and tip are chrome, wrapped in reddish orange. There is a number 8 or 00 on the receiver end depending on how you look at it. The receiver end is round metal with a flat side to attach to the handle. I can not find a makers name anywhere. I have been a fisherman over 50 years and have not seen this rod before. Any information you can provide would be very helpful. Thanks for your time and consideration.   GARY

I have seen several of these metal rods. There is little to no history written on them. The collectors set these interests and prices as well as encouraging the history.
Information that might help others
1 Is this rod telescoping?
2 Fly or spin/cast rod ? - handle above or below reel seat?
I am assuming that the 8 or 00 is the size of a guide ?
I do not understand nor is it common rod terminology, " receiver end "?

I did find a little history on steel rods in Classic and Antique Fly Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors and Anglers By A. J. Campbell
Price Book:
Antique & Collectible  Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide  by Homel, Dan. 1997 #2nd edition 2000# add about 30% for age of book.

There is also a lot of information on this web site, ,on steel rods and can be searched.

Here are several values for poor, good, excellent condition respectively from Homel.

Telescopic steel fly/bait rod 9' with reversible handle    20   50   100
Tubular steel bait casting rod 4 1/2'  c.1930          20   45   95
 Abbey & Imbrie " steel pack rod by Horton 4 1/2'  c.1915 12   30   60
LL Bean Solid steel octagonal baitcasting rods c.1938    4   12   30

Antique steel fly rod 8 1/2'  c.1905    9   28   50
Antique telescoping steel fly rod 10' maple handle    10   30   55
there are many more

You might  find these books at major libraries.

The only time I have seen these metal rods sell for more than 25 was to a restaurant to decorate a wall.
A recent search of completed items on ebay confirms the above 'guesstamate'.

Please remember I am a volunteer , the feedback is the only result I get from doing this.
Please provide feedback, nominations are appreciated.

I can answer questions on graphite fly rod building and bamboo rod restoration and making. I can guide people to restorers . I can guide people to rod building components on the internet as well as catalog. I can help them identify and value their bamboo fly rods with a picture .

If you are asking for the id of an old rod

please give a complete description send pictures especially labels or logos with detailed thorough description** to me and a complete including as much the following as you can: Is it? fly or casting rod ? Reel seat is below or above the cork handle ? Check metal for id and patents ? What is it made of; bamboo ( flat sided) fiberglass or graphite ( round)? Weight in oz? What is the diameter of the rod above the cork? Where was it purchased ? What type of metal nickel-silver, tin, or chrome platted brass? A complete description of any logos or labels. Length of rod per section and number of sections. Total rod length.

Please read the following if the rod has either of the following two labels

Montague or H-I (Horrocks-Ibbotson).

They are looked down upon by the collecting community and often they are justified. They were mass produced , rather heavy and very slow. They are not going to resale for very much.

Two books are available at larger libraries to get history and or value:
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook -Michael Sinclair
