About Albert Kirsch
Expertise
I am more-or-less expert in vexillology (the study of flags). My expertise is particularly strong in North America at the level of city and county, but if I don`t know the answer I know a dozen people who do. So if there`s a flag in the newspaper or on TV that you have trouble identifying, let me know. I`ll do my best. But PLEASE DO NOT ASK ME TO APPRAISE A FLAG'S VALUE: (1) I have no expertise in that area and (2) even if I did, I cannot appraise something I can't see. Take it to a museum which has a specialist in textiles and the like.

Experience
In this field, I designed the flag of Carroll County, Illinois, in 1974 (see http://www.internetni.com/~lanarklib/index.html). You can see my personal flag at http://www.nava.org/memflags.htm

Question
Do you have any numbers on the American Flag?

I'm working with a gentleman that sells flags and flagpoles in South Dakota. I'm trying to help with his marketing and I'd like to learn more about the industry.

I have a flag and flagpole myself, but I'm wondering more about "flag owners" and the demographics of a "flag owner".

I can't seen to find anything like this on the internet. Can you point me in the right direction?

Thank you in advance!! I LOVE the information I found in your answers to others!

John

Answer
I'm not sure what you mean by "numbers". There's the executive order 10834 that specifies the dimensions of the flag (http://flagspot.net/flags/us-exord.html) and I found an unofficial construction sheet at http://www.vexilla-mundi.com/united_states_of_america_flag.html -- is that what you're looking for?

I have no knowledge of the demographics of flag owners except that anecdotally they seem to be Republicans; Democrats seem to be diffident about that sort of thing. They are more likely to be white than black or Asian or Hispanic; even among whites I see urban ethnics flying their ancestral flags (Italian, Irish, Cuban, etc.) as well as, or instead of, the national flag.

But I have no clue as to facts and figures. Contacting someone in the industry would be a good place to start (Annin, Dettra, other flag manufacturers....)

Or am I misinterpreting what you're looking for?
