Flintstones - Fred's age and mother in law's name

Expert: Mark Daniels - 9/11/2006

Question
I have two questions.  How old was fred when the show aired in 1960?  What was Wilma's mother's name?

Answer
Hi

Fred's Mother-In-Law's first name was unknown but her last name on the episodes she appeared in was "Slaghoople". On some episodes WIlma's maiden name was Pebble while on others it was Slaghoople. So this is an inconsistancy in the series.

Also the ages are not known for sure. But the stories took place in the "stone age" in some respects while the early 60's in other respects. On Princestone of Flintstone aired in the 1961-62 season it was mentioned that Fred flunked out of high school and stayed there for 7 years. He stated he was in the class of 41, 42, 43. Assuming he was 18 years old in 1941 this would make his birth year 1922 or 1923. So at the beginning of the series it seemed to be implied Fred was about 40 years old and Wilma was a couple years younger.

Also the Flintstones was based on a 50's sitcom the Homeymooners where Fred was an animated Ralph. Ralph was also about 40 being Gleason was born in 1918 and being close to 40 in 1957. Also Wilma and Fred were said to have been married for 10 years on one episode "Kissing Burgler" in 1962 (implying they married in 1952). This would make Fred well at the very least 30 in 1962. But there is more. On "Hot Piano" in 1960 it was said Wilma and Fred were married for 16 years. This would make them married back in 1944 amd make Fred about 40.

Also Pebbles was their only child. It seems to be implied that Wilma would be past the child bearing age after Pebbles was born. But the show was canceled when Pebbles was about to turn 3.

So my estimate was that Fred would be 38 to 45 years of age during the series.
