Question I recently had new carpet (berber) installed in the upstairs of my home. Great job - except - in a 10 foot hallway there is a seam three feet from a seam in the door way. Installer assures me that to make efficient use of the carpet, it is common for there to be seams in the hallway. True?
Answer Hi Denise;I need to see the plan of the job. After it was measured, someone drew up a plan that determined seam layout, and the total sq. yds. or sq. ft. needed. That plan should have been shown to you for your approval BEFORE the carpet was ordered. The amount of carpet you need and seam placement is also determined by the width of the carpet. Some carpet is available in 12' widths, others in 13.6' width, and others in 15' width. I would be happy to review the layout with you if you could get me that plan and let me know in what width the carpet came. When you say a berber carpet, I assume you mean either an all loop pile carpet or a combination of cut and loop pile, instead of all cut pile. The longest carpet seams in that type of carpet must be made so they run into, NOT across, the main outside light source. I hope you watched the installation to be certain the installer stretched the carpet in with a powerstretcher (long poles that are screwed together and the carpet stretched in a pump like fashion), and not a knee kicker (a stretcher head that the installer hits with his knee on the padded part. If the installer just used a knee kicker, let me know that, and let me know which rooms have the carpet. When you let me know that you have the plan, I'll give you our office fax number so you can send it to me with the other information indicated above. What you indicated the installer told you may be an excuse, or it may be correct to save you extra sq. ft. needed. Again, I really need to see the plan and other information. Hope to hear from you soon.
Cordially,
John Michaels
