Question
QUESTION: I have a 50 year old home that I want to re-tile the bathroom in.  It has 2 x 10 joists and 3/4" subfloor planks over them, spaced 1/8" apart.  I was planning to put some 15/32" pressure treated plywood over the planks, and 1/4" hardibacker over the plywood with mud and screws.  My question--is the subfloor strong enough with the 15/32" plywood over the 3/4" planks, or should I upgrade to 3/4"?

ANSWER: 3/4 is better but stay away from the Hardi, use Ditra.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Of course 3/4" would be better, but is what i proposed sufficient?  Is there a minimum thickness under the backer board I need to maintain?  Can I buy Ditra at Home Depot or Lowes?

Answer
Not according the TCA they say you need at least.1- 1/4 thickness. While what they offer are only suggestions it is a good guideline to follow.
If you have just plywood under it the problems would be less but the deminsional lumber under it creates the possiblity of movement transferance to the primary substrate.

You can purchase it right off my website: www.indianafloorsllc.com
I have the best price on the net.
