Subject: re tiling shower

Question
can you re tile over the old glue thats on the cement wall boards.  Would the other glue stick to it

Answer
Hi Annette,
The simple answer is yes it is possible but only if the conditions are right for such a process. The bottom line is it is not recommended because it usually causes greater expense when compared to the cost of new board. First and of up most importance is the type of glue that is there now. Is it mastic or thinset? Next is the condition of the cement board, how damaged is it and how much of the old glue is remaining? This will determine how much the walls will need to be skimmed out to make them a flat and plumb surface.
What is the reason for re-tiling the shower? Was it due to leakage or just plain cosmetics? I ask this because if it was from leakage, then you will need to locate the cause in order to correct it.
Annette let me know the particulars for this project.
Jim
