Flooring and Carpeting - Laminate flooring problem

Expert: Dave Coil - 10/19/2009

Question
I had a Mohawk laminate floor installed 8 months ago.  It has the attached underlayment.  My house is 15 years old, raised 4 feet off the ground, and has a wood sub-floor.  It has swelling, buckling, and peaking occurring in a bedroom.  I had a home inspector with an infra-red moisture camera come in and inspect.  He found no evidence of moisture or leaking.  Mohawk's inspector said I have an on site moisture problem.  My dryer is vented to the roof.  A plumber has also inspected and found no leaks.  Do you have any advice?  I live in Louisiana.  Is humidity a factor?

Answer
Humidity is large in the south.  If you go from 20% in winter to 90% in summer...the laminate will expand greatly.  That is the reason for the gap around the perimeter of the flooring.  But if the area is too great...center cupping can occur.   I do my best to steer people away from Laminate floors...you are experiencing a good reason for NOT using laminates.
