Question
Hi Harvey,
I spend alot of time in my garage ....I was wanting to do an acid wash on my concret floor. Is this something that I could do myself? I have no idea what is involved I have just seen some restraunts that had done it and it looked fabulous. They told me that it had been acid washed. It also looked like there might have been some type of overcoat....would this be anything you might be able to help me with and would it be very costly?

You can do an acid stain on your garage floor with out much effort. The problem is that acid stain without a top coat will wash out some over time producing an uneven look. To to the job well you should clean your floor with a rotary scrubber and a strong alkaline cleaner, followed by an acidic cleaning. Then your acid stain, then a baking soda wed mope to bring to neutral pH. Then one or two coats of clear epoxy.
The acid stain reacts with the floor so you will not know how it looks until complete.
Another approach would be to do your cleaning steps and add two scrub rinses. Then two coats of a colored epoxy with or without color chips. This system will be stronger and will produce a consistent color result. Go to www.concrete-floor-coatings.com for a free cost analysis.
