Flooring and Carpeting - stripping a brick floor

Expert: Bill Hohmann - 10/27/2009

Question
QUESTION: I am considering buying a house with a brick floor that I believe is original to the house built in 1967.  I do not like the pink/tan color of the brick, so my first choice would be to lay a wood floor over the brick but was told this cannot be done.  So I think the next best thing would be to strip the sealer off the brick and stain it a darker color, then reseal it.  Is this possible?  Is it a do it yourself project or should I have it professionally done?

Thanks for your time,
Kat

ANSWER: I believe that if you look around, you will find that you can put a wood floor over a brick substrate.  Check with a flooring contractor.

You can strip the bricks, and apply a wood stain that is thinned out somewhat, followed by a sealer and a floor finish.  You should not have any real problem doing this yourself.

QUESTION: Do you suggest a particular stripper, stain, and sealer?

Thanks again for all advice!
Kat

Answer
It would help to know what is on the bricks presently, but our SR-5 stripper will get up just about anything.

Any oil based wood stain should work.  If you use Minwax, you will need to use their sealer.  Any other oil based wood stain can be followed with our sealers; water or oil based.
