Flooring and Carpeting - Tile Over Occupied Space

Question
Hi Chris,
I read your answer to the waterproofing a deck over an occupied space question. You recommended Laticrete Hydro Ban. On Laticrete Hydro Ban's data sheet it says it doesn't bond well to particle board. The roof is sloped 1/4" to the foot and the substrate is 2 layers of 1/2" OSB. The bottom layer is Radient Barrier. I'm concerned that the Hydro Ban will not bond well with the OSB. Do you have any experience with this? I'm considering hot-mopping it, then screwing down the Backer Board, and then applying the Hydro Ban. But it sounds like the Hydro Ban will not be compatible with the asphalt. The final surface is going to be 12" slate tile. Beneath this deck is an occupied space. Could you please advise me?  Thanks. Mark

Answer
Mark ,

OSB is not particle board...however I can see your concerns as the two are similar. I have not applied it to any wood surfaces save but a few 2x4's and 2x12's in shower installations. If you look further on the website Laticrete also supplies other products...and membranes. All that being said they are all capable of bonding to plywood. So the question remains, is it acceptable to apply over OSB. here is the 800 # ...call Laticrete and ask for technical services, they will know which product to recommend.

I think the theory behind particle board is 2 or 3 fold ...it is too porous...it swells and deforms when moisture affects it and is not dense enough to be rated as a suitable substrate ...causing deflection and other issues.. Particle board is never an approved substrate for any floor including wood/vinyl/tile.

If you are applying the backer board then all you need to do is apply the membrane to the backer board...however if you are seeking a true water proofing system I would look at the Laticrete BLUE 92...or the HYDRO BARRIER. If it weren't so late I would call them and ask for my self , just to see what they recommend.

Let me know how it goes.

Chris
