Flooring and Carpeting - Exterior door adjustment during hardwood installation

Expert: Haven Hardwoods - 4/22/2009

Question
I am having solid 3/4" oak plank installed in my front hall. When the recommended hardwood installer came by for an estimate he thought my front door (which is a standard metal over wood) could not be cut down to allow for the additional height of the floor. He recommended I replace the entire front door.  This strikes me as very odd. What alternatives would be available?  Thanks so much.

Answer
Meredith,

Hello and thanks for the question.  When a client wants real wood by a door that is too low and can't be trimmed I recommend either some kind of engineered wood or a 5/16" thick strips.  Too replace the entire door is not cost effective unless you have your heart set on having full 3/4" flooring.  Even if you still did want to have 3/4" flooring you could take your existing door out, cut the opening higher and reinstall the door.  This will cost a bit in labor, though.  Bottom line: install engineered or 5/16".
