Flooring and Carpeting - Armstrong laminate floor chipped

Expert: Haven Hardwoods - 5/11/2009

Question
We had a Armstrong laminate floor installed in May 2005 by a local retailer. (Armstrong Natures Gallery American Duet) The main area of the floor is covered by a fairly thick (1/2") area rug. In December 2008 I removed the area rug to have it cleaned and found a chip in the floor about the size of a quarter. A laminate board had chipped on the edge where it locks to the adjoining board. This particular floor is not flush, that is; it has grooves along each board to simulate an old floor. Thats where it chipped. I first called the retailer who, after checking with the local Armstrong manufacturer representative, said that chipping is not covered under the 30 year warrantee. The manuf. rep. refused to speak with me and told me to call the manufacturer, which I did. Customer service gave me the same answer; that chipping is not covered. Armstrong says I must have dropped something on the floor. I maintain that the floor was covered by a rug and should not have chipped. The floor is covered for manufacturers defect which I think is the problem. I think that Armstrong knows that the grooves along each board make it susceptible to chipping. Have you heard of this before and what action could I take next?

Answer
JoAnn,

Yes, I have heard and seen laminate flooring chip.  If I were you I would call around to get a flooring contractor to repair the board.  It should be a relatively inexpensive and easy fix.  Maybe the company that installed it will meet you half way on the price.  There really is no way to tell if the chip was from the manufacturer, installer or you.  Hope that helps.
