Flooring and Carpeting - Reducer strip between tile and wood laminate

Expert: John Michaels - 6/26/2009

Question
Hi John, I've just installed backer board and tile in 3 bathrooms. In two that makes the level about 3/4 above the wood laminate outside the door. In the third the tile is 5/8 above the tile in the hall. I haven't been able to find a wood "threshold" or "reducer strip" that would work for the first 2? What do I use for the tile to tile?
Where might I find what I need?

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Jody;'google' transition strips, and look through the websites that appear, especially <installerstore.com>.  They have an 800# which you should call and give them you needs while you have their website up.  They can tell you on what to click to see their offerings.  Next, 'google' wooden transition strips, and look through the sites that appear.  Next, visit the website of
<roppe.com> and look through their premium rubber type transition strips.  There are lots of suppliers in those catagories.  I'm most concerned with the tile/laminate floor junctures.  You should not clean laminate with water, so wet track-offs from the bathroom can damage the edge of the laminate.  Make certain, at those junctures, that any transition strips you install, are put down so there is no chance for any track-off moisture to penetrate the edges of the laminate flooring.  It might be wise to put down a two sided cotton throw rug on the tile, in those junctures to act as an aborbent surface for moisture that reaches to that point.  TRY one rug first to make sure it is NOT a tripping hazard and will clear the bottom of the door.  If there is not enough door clearance and the rug works, you may have to properly trim down the door.

If you have any other questions or cannot find a proper transition strip, please feel free to get back to me.

Cordially,

John Michaels
