Flooring and Carpeting - concrete floor

Expert: Harvey Chichester - 6/29/2009

Question
I just pulled up the indoor/outdoor carpet that was glued to a concrete floor many moons ago.  It left lots of glue residue and pieces of carpet backing.  I want to get the floor in shape to put down self-sticking linoleum floor tiles. How can I make the concrete smooth? Can it be sanded? Is there something to soften the glue to remove it?
HELP!

Answer
Dear Sandy,

If your adhesive is black you can use mineral spirits and water to remove it.  If the adhesive is Carmel colored it can be sanded using a rotary scrubber like a school janitor would use and a sanding screen.  You could also use a high alkaline detergent and hot water but it will take two or three applications and a 4 in. razor scraper on a long handle.  You can find a strong cleaner at www.concrete-floor-coatings.com

Best of luck.

Harvey Chichester
