Flooring and Carpeting - saltillo tile problem

Expert: Bill Hohmann - 6/25/2009

Question
I'm trying to remove residue of rubberized non-skid covering that I laid down under some area rugs. When I try to pull the covering up, it leaves great hunks of rubberized stuff and adhesive. I've tried many things to clean it off the tiles. The only thing that even came close to taking it off (acetone) also took off the finish of the tiles.
I hope I don't have to strip and refinish them all, as they only a few years old, and the affected area is large.
Can you suggest some kind of cleaner that might remove the crap and leave the tiles okay?
Many thanks.

Answer
Some of these contain a plasicizer that leaches into the sealer and/or flooring, making this quite difficult.  Try 409 and a slightly abrasive pad. Afterwards, you can apply a floor finish to the tiles in order to punch the aesthetics back up.
