Flooring and Carpeting - trips on the corners of layed 18 in porcelain fl

Expert: Jim Carlin,csi,csms - 7/4/2009

Question
Why would there be corners on some of my tiles that where layed pointed up not level with the other tiles?  We had a professional lay the tile.  Three of the tiles on one of the corners are raised like a pointed trip.  They have to be redone but what could have caused this.  One floor has sheet rock under the tiles and the other floor is on a slab.
                                    Thank You,
                                     Jim

Answer
Hi Jim,
This is where and when people get in trouble. It all starts with inexperience. Sorry if I hurt your feelings but it’s still the reason based on what little info you are telling me. All tiles are not necessarily flat. Actually the larger the unit the greater the chance it will have a warp in it. Place a straight edge across the face (top) of the tile. I’m willing to bet that’s what it is (warped). Any recourse against the manufacturer is a mute point since you already installed the tiles. The cases usually are printed with the statement that any claim against the tiles is void after installation.
If you have any tiles left over, place them on a flat surface and see if you can rock it indicating a warped tile on a flat surface.
If in fact this is what happened (installed warped tiles) try talking with the dealer, then moving up the food chain to the distributor.
Another possibility is you bought them at a big box store in an effort to save money. Remember there are grades of tile, thinset, etc.  Each is designed to be sold to certain markets.
