Flooring and Carpeting - Carpet indents

Expert: Jim Goddard - 2/2/2004

Question
How can your bring carpet back to its original condition where furniture has been sitting on it for 2 - 3 years, and has left indents? It was new carpet then, just installed.
Thanks.

Answer
Often furniture will leave marks because the pad allows the back of the carpet to distort.  You can bring the pile back  to normal by placing a damp towel over the dent, and then steaming with a steam iron set on "perm press".  Be careful not to melt the fiber by getting the iron too hot.  While the fiber is still hot from steaming, take a comb and bring the fiber back up.

This will remove at least half of the dent.  The rest of the dent is that caused by a distorted carpet back.

Hope this helps,

Jim Goddard
