Flooring and Carpeting - Finishing wood floor

Expert: Patrick Copell - 5/30/2006

Question
If you've done floors for years and wouldn't do it, how should anyone go about polishing their floors? I'm told it should be done every several years?

Question -
Patrick, A couple yrs ago we had hardwood floors installed in several rooms of our house, by an unreliable, and somewhat dishonest individual. By the time the job was over, we paid him just to get him out of our home. I believe he took us for a ride when he finished the floors. He told us there was a relatively new stain/finish combination that looked good and lasted a long time. We went with it. We know very little about wood floors, but thought there should be some gloss to our floors. There was almost none. I'd like to refinish our floors before putting in new furniture. I have no idea what equipment and supplies I need or what to do with it. Is it something I should be able to do relatively easily or do I have no place trying as a beginner? Thanks for your time.

Answer -
This is not a good place to start as a beginner.
you can do major damage and even make things worse.
I have been in flooring for a long time, and even I wouldn't attempt it.

there is a such thing as a high gloss, and a satin finish.
the high gloss shows imperfections alot more, and the satin hides them better.

Answer
There are several types of refinishing options.
The only one that is DIY friendly in my opinion, is applying a polish that does not require a sanding. I am not sure if the coat of urethane that was applied is available for that kind of product.
All other refinishing requires a sanding first.
You heard it should be done every few years, but a majority of wood floor owners refinish their floor ONCE. It is messy, and time consuming. You have to take all the furniture out of the home, and let the home breathe for a few days during refinishing. Most people don't have the down time for that every few years.

I hope this helps you a bit.
