I can help. I have installed wood, laminates, tile, marble, ceramics, vinyl, and painted applications. I have done some stone work, but that is seldom used anymore.

My first work was in flooring and interior designs.   My first job... every room of the house was a different color of walls and carpet.   It can work...

Flooring and Carpeting - Hardwood floor problem

Expert: Dave Coil - 8/10/2004

Question
Hello,

I recently bought a 1941 house.  Two rooms had vinyl tile, which we planned to replace.

Upon pulling it up, we were surprised to find finished hardwood floors.  The only problem is that after we pulled up the tile, there remained a black felt-tar-paper like residue, we assume used as an adhesive.  We haven't been able to get this off.

How would you suggest removing this without damaging the finish on the floors?

Thanks,

Ryan

Answer
Usually the glue used is an oil base type adhesive.  Considering the apparent age...the finish on the wood floor is not worth saving.   The hardwood floor probably IS worth saving.  This is not an easy task, very time consuming, and above all....very rewarding.  You can try mineral spirits, acetone, lacquer thinner, simple green, or oils such as turpentine or linsead.  Start small and see what will work the best in your conditions.
