Flooring and Carpeting/Installing carpet on travertine Stairs?
Expert: Eric Barnett - 5/17/2007
QuestionQUESTION: We purchased a home that has travertine throughout the downstairs including a steep stairway to the 2nd floor. We have two small children and the steps have become a safety concern. Is there any way to install carpeting over the travertine without damaging the travertine?
ANSWER: Hello Traci!!
You should not have any problem putting carpet over the Travertine. As long as you are using a Rebond carpet pad between the carpet and the Travertine, you should be fine. However, the Installer will need somewhere to "anchor" the carpet. Which means that he will need to install a tack strip to the sub-floor somewhere so that the carpet will be attached. That is the only concern I can think of, is figuring out how to attach the carpet to a tack strip. Also, make sure the Travertine has been sealed within the last year. Try posing this question to Perry Vellenga as well, he has more experience with tile than I do. He is another one of the flooring experts on this site. I hope this helps!!!

QUESTION: Thank you Eric, one follow-up: do you mean that the top and bottom of the
carpet should be anchored or each stair? Also, by sub-floor you mean the
wood below the travertine, correct? Lastly, in terms of pricing would you
expect the install costs will be a lot more than a normal carpet; one person
gave me an estimate of $600.00 for the labor alone but wouldn't tell me
exactly how he would go about doing the job. I will also pose the question
to Perry. Thank you for the quick response.
ANSWER: The carpet needs to be attached at each stair. If you already got an estimate from an Installer, than I assume he already looked at the job. If that is the case, then you should be fine. If you tell me how much carpet is involved, I can tell you whether or not the Installer is giving you a fair price. Thanks.

QUESTION: I sent photos of the stairs to the installer along with the following
measurements: 16 steps in total: 13 are 41 1/2" X 11", The stairs widen at the
bottom: 1 at 50 X10, 1 at 57 X10, 1 at 64 X 10. The 600.00 was for labor alone,
no carpet included. Would installing a runner be a better option or the same
issues? Thanks much.
ANSWER: YES, use a Runner!!!!! I can't believe I didn't suggest that. You should be able to purchase a runner and get it installed for less than $600. Their are decorative brackets made by a company called Zoroufy that would make it much easier. If you want to tell me what city you live in, I could probably recommend a place I have dealt with that could help you. Thanks Traci!!

QUESTION: Great, I live near Scottsdale/Phoenix, AZ and any recommended installer would
be greatly appreciated. I think people are a little nervous when drilling into the
travertine. How thick of a pad can I put under the runner? Thanks for your help
and , this has been very helpful.
AnswerCall the folks at ProSource Flooring in Phoenix. Their # is (602) 470-1484. This is a Members Only Wholesale flooring place, but if you let them know that you need and Installer, they should be able to connect you with someone that can help. They will have a pad that is made especially for Runners. It will prevent the Runner from slipping and provide a little cushion in case the children fall down on the stairs. Hope this helps!!!
