They are specialty stores where the floor package can cost upwards of $50,000 for one store. I have also done "Structure" stores and J. Flooring and Carpeting - bathroom tile floor

Expert: Perry Vellenga - 5/12/2006

Question
Perry,

I read a few reviews in regard to this, I'm just sill uncertain.
I'm updating my bathroom, which currently exists of those old 1" tiles. I think if I even attempt to remove those tiles, the slab its on is going to be a mess.

Is it safe to tile over the existing 1" tiles? They are solid as a rock. I'm not replacing the tub and there's a marble slab at the doorway that's about 1/4" over the existing floor.

Thank you,
Steve

Answer
Thank you for your question Steve,

The answer is yes, but lets do a couple things to prepare ok? Rent, or borrow, or buy, a belt sander. Purchase the coarsest sand paper belts and burnish (rough up) the entire floor, by the way...pull the toilet first ok? After you have done a very thorough job of it get it all cleaned up and then get a small tub of "Sulfamic Crystals" which is a mild acid and scrub the floor TWICE, so scrub it completely once rinse...let dry...and do it again, follow me? This will remove any cleaner buildup that may be in the grout joints and open up the pores of the grout as well and help with the bonding of the new layer. When you get to the door your 1/4" marble threshold will now be too low but never fear. Most Marble shops carry a "thicker" version of the same one you have and be better suited for the higher finish with the new tile. Ok Steve I hope this helps you with your project, feel free to return anytime.
