AboutDave Coil Expertise I can help. I have installed wood, laminates, tile, marble, ceramics, vinyl, and painted applications. I have done some stone work, but that is seldom used anymore.
Experience My first work was in flooring and interior designs. My first job... every room of the house was a different color of walls and carpet. It can work...
Question In prepping to install marble tiles,I have removed the old linoleum tiles from my bathroom floor, which is cement. Do I need to remove the black mastic which was used to affix the tiles? If so, how do I do it? I tried turpentine, which actually works, but it would take a looooonnng time to clean the floor. And then there's the problem of the fumes.
Also - my Sunset book says professional installers use silicon caulk as a mastic to set marble and granite tiles instead of thinset. Seems like the caulk would be much easier. Do you think it would work?
Thanks - Barbee
Answer First off, there is a razor blade scraper that works very well to clean that glue off. "Second" never use a mastic to set tiles on a floor. It is meant for wall applications. Any application that not cementous in makeup will allow movement and let the tiles break an the grout to facture. Some "professionals" will use what ever is cheap and fast to make easy money. I have done alot of tile repairs where they used that method..... the homeowners were NOT impressed with that. The mastic method is quite ok for countertops.... you dont put much weight on them.
