Flooring and Carpeting - laminate vs. engineered wood

Expert: Patrick Copell - 4/25/2004

Question
My husband and recently got a quote to have a Bruce engineered wood floor installed in our living room and hallway, but now I'm second guessing that decision.  You see, we have a 6 year old daughter and a Jack Russell terrier dog.  I'm just afraid that after spending the $3,000 to do this, my child and dog will ruin the floor.  Because of that, I've been looking into laminate flooring like Pergo or Wilsonart.  I'd really like some advice from an expert.  We want something that going to last for many years.
What would your choice be?

Any help is appreciated.

Sincerely,
Shelley LeBlanc

Answer
Laminate floor is more durable, and could last quite awhile before it needs replacing.
Wood lasts longer because of the sand and finish capability, and it will add alot more value to the home, but will be more out of pocket in the beginning.
Buy a rustic wood that make scratches and dents look like character, and sand and finish once the little one is out of the home.
