My first work was in flooring and interior designs.   My first job... every room of the house was a different color of walls and carpet.   It can work...

Flooring and Carpeting - subfloor for hardwood flooring

Expert: Dave Coil - 5/14/2004

Question
We are installing tongue and groove hardwood floor in our kitchen to match up to our entryway.  When we pulled the linoleum we found we had 1/2" particle board for a subloor, on top of a hardwood base.  Do we have to replace it or can we put down rosin paper and install with 1 1/2" nails?   Please advise, we are at a stand still!  A contractor who bid the project said he would just use existing subfloor while Home Depot said they would remove and replace.  If that is required, my next question is would all the appliances and island need to be removed?  Thanks for your help!

Answer
This is a bit difficult to advise from my vantage point.  I would suggest that the old particle board be removed...for the simple reason of elevation.   The wood flooring is going to raise your floor by at least 3/4"  If possible the new flooring should go under the island, under the appliances, and not be over the carpet.  As you know, the hardwood floor should outlast any other floor going.   Doing it right....the key to longevity.
