Question
I'm buying a old home with wood floors. The floors look fine, but I want to repolish them, not refinish. How can I tell if they have a polyurethane or wax coating?

Answer
Polish and wax wont stick to Poly.  Polyurethane is a plastic finish.  You can recoat the poly....but you cant wax or polish it.  No adhesion.   Shellac and Lacquer can be polished/waxed.  If it is poly.... try alchohol or lacquer thinner.  It will have no effect on the poly.  It will destroy wax or polish.
