AboutMike Turner Expertise Folk Music, particularly the Child Ballads and that great body of industrial and work-related songs which arose during the Industrial Revolution. I am well-versed in the history of the Folk Revival, and I have a particular interest in political and agit-prop songs, as well as in traditional Irish dance music. For ten years I was a committee member and resident singer/song-writer/musician with the Grey Cock Folk Club in Birmingham (the pre-eminent traditional club in the English midlands, which was founded by Charles Parker of `Radio Ballad` fame).

Question I'm not sure what category this belongs in so I thought I'd start here. I've been trying to find out what songs are featured in the Boston Pops Hoe-down arr. by Hayman. Many sound familiar but I can't name them. Thanks!
Answer Hi Maureen,
Thank you for drawing this piece to my attention.
I'm not sure of all the titles by any means, but I got the following from one listen-through :-
(1) ???
(2) a hoedown tune, probably "Turkey in the Straw" which he mentions in the intro
(3) a Scottish reel that I have on tape played by 7:84 Theatre Company, but I can't recall the title
(4) "The Captain Pugwash Hornpipe", I believe, though played as a reel here - it's normally played dotted
(5) ???
(6) an Irish jig, title unknown
(7) "Pop goes the Weasel"
(8) a Scottish reel - again I have this on tape, but can't name it
(9) a Hoedown tune that I recall dancing to, many times
(10) ???
(11) "The Dashing White Sergeant", I believe
(12) "Rakes of Mallow"
(13) a fiddle reel - not sure what origin
(14) reprise of (3)
This is certainly a cosmopolitan collection of folk dance tune styles and dances. I enjoyed it immensely. Sorry I haven't got many names for you - perhaps a direct approach to Mr Hayman would yield fruit?
