Question Hi Peter,
I have a unique idea to change screw cap bottles in such a way that will result in more sales of them...anyway more sales than competitor screw cap bottles that do not feature my idea. I have not patented this. Please point me in the best direction as to how to get this idea rolling. Will it be better to approach manufacturers of screw cap bottles or the manufacturer of the what goes inside of such bottles?
Answer First, if you can, patent your idea or at least file a disclosure, the first step towards a patent. This costs something but is crucial. Most companies will not talk to you without such a step because they fear being accused of stealing the idea. It is also a way to determine if you really have something - sadly, many good ideas have already been had by others.
As to who might benefit most, it probably depends on the nature of the improvement. If it is generic to screw cap closures, then approach packaging companies such as Crown Cork or White Cap. (There are many others.)If it is especially applicable to one or more categories, then think about approaching them, but that might be more challenging since there could be many. (If there are not many, why are you bothering?)
Companies are more open to outside ideas, but they must be protected. The unscrupulous ones will steal ideas and the honorable ones fear being accused of doing so.
