Food Safety Issues - Sour Cream and Stainless Steel Spoons

Expert: Carl Copeland - 1/25/2008

Question
My boyfriend and I are stuck in a huge debate over sour cream.  He maintains that you should not use a metal spoon to scoop sour cream out of the container because it causes what is left in the container to curdle at a faster rate.  Therefore you should only use a wooden or plastic spoon. I cannot see any scientific basis for this and after questioning the people I know, I have never met another person with this belief.  Have we all be incorrectly serving sour cream our whole lives or this just a old wives tale?  Thanks!

Answer
Carin,

How are you doing? I've searched high and low for an answer about not using a metal spoon when dealing with sour cream. However, when looking at recipes prepared with  sour cream the only spoon they used was a metal spoon. I'm not going to say your boyfriend is wrong but he needs to show you something in writing. If you don't agree you can always find recipes without sour cream if you visit
